"School Fuel" feeding students on weekends

4. Article concerns: San Marcos creates a "community generated" program to provide lunches for targeted students on weekends

5. Why is this important to families/individuals?: San Marcos is providing lunches to targeted students on the weekends. As a community, SM is trying to expand the program to all of the elementary campuses. By having lunches for the weekends, they are enabling the individual student/family to be able to receive a healthy meal outside of school. The lunches are picked up on Friday afternoons in brown bags and are packaged with food for the weekend. This means that the student will have a guaranteed meal for days off of school and that is one less thing the family has to worry about.

6. My views: I think that this is a very good program for the elementary students, but once they reach out to the elementary campuses, San Marcos should try to expand into middle schools and so on. The students having meals on the weekends is a gateway for the children to have a healthier lifestyle. This is a great way to make sure the children have a nutritious lunch available to them!

  1. I think that this is an awesome idea! Not every family is fortunate enough to be able to provide a healthy meal for their children in which this would help out their families a lot. With this program families could use their extra money towards bills or other necessities and have one less thing to worry about. I hope that they are able to expand to other campuses and even other grade levels too so many more students can have a healthy free meal to look forward to on the weekends as well as during school.
